All are welcome to a poetry discussion and creative writing workshop, “Making dragons out of maps: How to use research in poetry,” created and led by Samira Asma-Sadeque.

For this workshop, we will use research to enhance our poetry  — academic / scientific / social, whichever is most appropriate and applicable. We will use academic papers, legal documents, news stories, encyclopaedias – whatever is preferred by the writer depending on their work. We will read poems by Ada Limón and Safia Elhillo, and explore how using hard facts in our poetry can only enrich our creative imagination.

Samira Asma-Sadeque is a New York-based Bangladeshi journalist, poet and educator. She writes about the immigrant experience, mental health, hate speech, and gender violence in both her poetry and journalism. Her poetry appears in the HBO series Take Out with Lisa Ling, PBS/All Arts TV, Button Poetry, and has been featured at the Rubin Museum among other platforms. She is a Brooklyn Poets fellow, a Tin House alum, and a Best of the Net nominee.

Her journalism appears in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post and Al Jazeera among other publications.

Registration is required; space is limited. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's wishes while allowing as many people to participate in these workshops as is possible. This program is for adult participants, aged 18 and older.
