Poetry Magazine Editors

Several prizes are awarded annually for work printed in Poetry during the preceding year. Only poems already published in the magazine are eligible for consideration, and no formal application is necessary. The winners are announced in the November issue. Below the prize descriptions is a complete list of past prize winners.

The Poetry Foundation also administers many other awards and grants.

The Levinson Prize, presented annually since 1914 through the generosity of the late Salmon O. Levinson and his family, in the amount of $500, is awarded to Patricia Jabbeh Wesley for her poems “Black Woman Selling Her Home in America” and “Healing Will Come: Elegy after Natural Disaster” in the June 2022 issue.

The Bess Hokin Prize, established in 1948 through the generosity of Poetry’s late friend and guarantor Mrs. David Hokin, in the amount of $1,000, is awarded to Jan Dennis Destajo and Kabel Mishka Ligot for their poem “The root of our shared word for ‘home’ is ‘to be consoled’” in the November 2021 issue.

The Frederick Bock Prize, founded in 1981 by friends in memory of the former associate editor of Poetry, in the amount of $500, is awarded to Muna Abdulahi for her poem “ESL” from the February 2022 issue.

The J. Howard and Barbara M.J. Wood Prize, endowed since 1994, in the amount of $5,000, is awarded to Janelle Tan for her poems “Section 267C [Ars Poetica]” and “Section 377A [America]” in the September 2022 issue.

The John Frederick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation, established in 1999 by Bonnie Larkin Nims, trustees of the Poetry Foundation, and friends of the late poet, translator, and editor, in the amount of $500, is awarded to Irma Pineda and Wendy Call for their translations “No duelen las heridas,” “No wound hurts,” “La guerra nos declaraste,” “You declared war on us,” “Te pesará mi voz,” and “My voice will weigh on you” from the Isthmus Zapotec and Spanish in the February 2022 issue.

The Friends of Literature Prize, established in 2002 by the Friends of Literature, in the amount of $500, is awarded to Gabriel Townsell for his poem “Street Mythology” in the December 2021 issue.

The Editors Prize for Feature Article, established in 2005, in the amount of $1,000, is awarded to two authors this year: Sasha Pimentel for her essay “To Cross the Distance” in the April 2022 issue and Raymond Antrobus for his essay “Poetry, Disability, and Vigilance” in the September 2022 issue.

The Editors Prize for Reviewing, established in 2004, in the amount of $1,000, was not awarded in 2022 since Poetry magazine didn’t publish any reviews in the previous year. Instead, we awarded two prizes for Feature Article.

The Editors Prize for Visual Poetry, established in 2019, in the amount of $1,000, is awarded to Keith S. Wilson for his poem “Processing Emmett Till (Uncanny Emmett Till #2)” from the September 2022 issue.

Congratulations to this year’s winners and many thanks to the judges of this year’s magazine prizes: Rosemary Barilla, Cynthia Borah, Sayeeda Carter, Teré Fowler-Chapman, Craig Lawrence, and Precious Symonette.
